Have you noticed that there is lots of chat about “lymphatic” out there. Even I am getting inundated on my socials with lymphatic this that and the other. Lots of people out there are promoting that they do lymphatic but what does that actually mean?
Vodder Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialised set of techniques designed to facilitate the movement of interstitial fluid into the initial lymph capillaries, following established anatomical pathways. It is science based with peer reviewed articles with empirical evidence – just google it!
Whilst it is exciting that the lymphatic system is getting lots of interest, there is some key differences between Vodder MLD, lymphatic “massage” or lymphatic body sculpting.
Often the terms are intertwined and as there is no regulations it can be difficult to navigate
Think about what outcome you want to achieve and then look at what the Therapist is offering
Did you know?
1. If you press deeper or heavier instead of skin movements, this will compress the the superficial lymphatic vessels and restrict lymphatic flow
2. Use of oils and creams create a barrier which restrict the ability to move lymph. Think skin movement, not massage!
So what is Lymphatic Massage or Sculpting
We don’t massage or sculpt for gentle manual lymphatic drainage. This is your first clue that this is something deeper. Remember what I said about deeper pressure compressing those lymphatic vessels?
Some things to look for
If there are creams, oils being applied to the skin, this is a sculpt or massage
If the technique is fast, then this is a sculpt or massage
If there tools to press deeper or roll over the skin, then… this is a sculpt or massage
If they don’t start at the neck to open the lymphatic “gates then…this is a sculpt or massage
The focus is on sculpting techniques for the abdomen or face with a bit of node pumping then… this is a sculpt or massage
If this is what you want, then absolutely no problem but do not confuse a sculpt with manual lymphatic drainage.
The 6 Outcomes of Vodder MLD
1. Gently Encourages a systematic lymph fluid movement – improves the flow!
2. Helps to reduce swelling
3. Supports your immune and circulatory system
4. Promotes detoxification and waste removal (through the liver and kidneys)
5. Calming of the central nervous system – you may notice improved sleep post treatment
This is perfect for someone with a compromised lymphatic system (lymphoedema, lipoedema, CVI or under cancer care), pre-post surgery, great for women’s health conditions, improvement of lymphatic or immune health or a facial glow! (Next post will talk about this!
Not sure what is the right treatment for you?
Ask your Therapist and always ask what their qualifications are. These should be listed and if not, ask!
Qualified MLD Therapists are generally listed on the Australaisan Lymphology Association, Lymph Info Trust (look for ALA accredited) or Vodder School International
